Since Pana is a tourist destination for Guatemalans, lots come here for Semana Santa. But, while there are religious observances, a lot of what's happening is a lot more about the flesh than the spirit.
There will be 21 concerts in town this year (as opposed to just one last year, according to a local woman). Little tiendas (stores) and all over fence posts, people are putting up big and little signs for beer. There are discos and bars that are amp-ing up (literally - noise!). There are little makeshift booths popping up on the side of streets that are already narrow. Sadly, there are drunks that are literally lying on the sidewalk in their own vomit.
And LOTS of people, Guatemalans and foreigners, everywhere. Does the economy good, but we will mostly be staying home this week!
