Insurers in Guatemala

In the US, medical insurance is necessary, both to make sure you have access to quality medical care without going bankrupt, but also now with Obamacare, it is required to avoid penalties.

Medical insurance in Guatemala is available, but you may or may not want to use it. 

Why NOT get medical insurance here?  Well, the medical care is so much cheaper than in the States.  A visit to a doctor may be only about $25 or so.  And, because we live in a small town, there aren't any specialists nearby, so we don't tend to go to a doctor for small things. We can go to a lab for lab tests ourselves, without a doctor's order, and find out about infections, or A1C for diabetes, calcium level, hemoglobin, and so on. The lab tech sits down with you to explain the results.  If you have an infection, you can go to the pharmacy and get medicines without a prescription.  The doctor is not necessarily at the center of every health care matter. 

When we first got here, I sought a quote from one company, and for a pretty full coverage for me (Nancy), it would have cost about $100/month (by my memory of it).  That included coverage that would extend to other countries, as I recall (I'm sure you'd pay and then submit it for reimbursement).  BUT - since Bill was over 65 at the time, that company simply did not offer it to him!
