From a deep sleep, at about 5:30 am this morning, suddenly the bed was violently shaking, and we heard a loud POP outside. We ran outside, as I grabbed my robe. Leo and Lourdes Santizo were visiting, and they were heading out as we were.
EARTHQUAKE!
At its epicenter just over the Mexican border, it was a 7.1 earthquake, a major one. The Santizos are from very near there, and their family said water in the pila (outdoor sink) was sloshing back and forth wildly.
We are hearing news of two deaths and houses destroyed in San Marcos, and roads with damages, landslides, and Quetzaltenango has its power off.
The only thing on our house is that our large painting was knocked askew.
We haven't learned what the pop sound was. (NOTE: we later found out the pop was a transformer blowing).
If you're interested in earthquakes (and yes, I'm talking to you, Christine), here's a site to look at: http://earthquakestoday.info.
So, after we ran outside, it quickly subsided. We gave almost a shrug... and went back inside.
