We made a quick one-day trip to Antigua yesterday. There is another English group starting there, and we got to meet some of the friends there. A sweet couple, Frazier and Abby, invited us to lunch at their home, even at the last minute! (Sadly I didn't take any pictures!)
And Antigua even has a McDonalds with a great rating on TripAdvisor! First of all, any American fast food is kinda cool down here. Has a mystique, a taste of home. And they are cleaner and have better service there, because these are the truly cool jobs for young people! We didn't eat there, but will go next time.
BUT - lesson learned - don't trust GoogleMaps to estimate the duration of the trip. It says it should take one hour and nine minutes. Instead, it took almost two and a half hours. I don't know if they don't accurately estimate the distance due to twist and turns, or if they overestimate the average speed (slower due to "sinuous" roads).
Another 'lesson learned', that our GPS we just bought in the US last spring, and paid $40 to load Guatemala maps... didn't work very well. The biggest issue is that when I tried to program Antigua as a destination, it didn't even list Antigua as existing! The roads were a bit off... though there were some times it was accurate and helpful. Just not enough to have bothered.
Back to paper maps and pulling over to the side and asking a local, "Una preguntita por favor ..."
Looking forward to getting back to Antigua when we have more time to linger!
